Fireplace by Bedrock

A custom Rammed Earth Finish developed to hold the red-brown of Argentina’s Quebracho — the wood burned for Asado grilling — in a restaurant built around open fire.

Fireplace by Bedrock is a restaurant about elemental cooking — classic technique, natural materials, an open wood-fire kitchen. The surfaces had to belong to that, not decorate it.

The Rammed Earth Finish is a plaster, not a wall: 7–10 mm of stratified clay that interprets the banding of a rammed earth wall in trowelled layers. The colour was developed bespoke to the rich red-brown of the Quebracho tree, traditionally burned for Asado charcoal, and its layered tones sit against fine metal mesh curtains and a leather artwork commissioned from Balinese craftsmen.

Every rammed earth plaster project is developed as a one-off. There is no standard colour for this finish — the strata are set out for the room they are going into.
