Specification and technical data

Resin-bound and resin-bonded surfacing — specification and technical data

A cold-applied polyurethane resin binding graded aggregate into a permeable, seamless surface course. Specified for driveways, footpaths, promenades, pedestrian areas, lightly trafficked car parks and low speed access roads. The permeability figures below are the ones a drainage engineer needs.

The system

What sits against what, from the substrate outwards. Junctions, movement joints and edge details are project-specific — send us the drawings and we will mark them up.

Resin bound surface course

Aggregate is pre-mixed with the resin and laid to depth. The surface is permeable through the full build-up.

BUILD ORDER — SUBSTRATE FIRST, IN SEQUENCE Sub-base
To the drainage strategy. Permeable build-up where the surface is to discharge to ground.
Base course
Concrete free of laitance, oil, grease and loose particles; or bituminous base to specification. Movement and construction joints to be reflected through the surface.
Edge restraint
Brick, stone, concrete or steel edging, specified as part of the design.
Surface course
Resin and aggregate mixed and spread with a straight-bladed squeegee, then trowelled or power-floated to a compacted finish.
Anti-skid dressing
Fine glass grit or white aluminium oxide at approximately 50 g/m² where additional slip resistance is required.

Resin bonded surface dressing

PU Addastone. Resin is applied to the substrate and aggregate is broadcast into it — a textured, non-permeable dressing.

BUILD ORDER — SUBSTRATE FIRST, IN SEQUENCE Concrete substrate
Primed with EP Addastone Primer. Moisture content below 4% and free of rising damp — typically one week per 25 mm of new concrete.
Bituminous substrate
Base course 50–60 mm AC20 Dense Bin 100/150 and 25–30 mm AC6 Dense Surf 100/150, laid to a fall of 1:40 to 1:60. Dried at least 7 days before shot blasting, or 28 days if not shot blasting.
Resin
Applied by 3 mm serrated squeegee and back-rolled. Addastone Thixotropic Agent added for asphalt and slopes.
Aggregate
Broadcast to excess, then swept and vacuumed until shedding stops.

Addagrip Terraco Ltd Addaset Resin bound surfacing The reference UV-stable resin bound system: a cold-applied clear polyurethane screed binding natural aggregate into a permeable, seamless surface course. BBA assessed, with published permeability figures a drainage engineer can design to. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Addaset ECO Resin bound surfacing with recycled aggregate Addaset with recycled aggregate and recycled glass in the blend. Same resin, same BBA route, same permeability figures — the difference is the recycled content, which is the reason it appears in sustainability-led specifications. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Addaset Non UVR Resin bound surfacing, non-UV-stable The non-UV-stable grade of Addaset. Identical performance in every respect except that the resin darkens under UV. Specify it only where the colour shift is acceptable or the area is sheltered. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Addaset TP Polyurethane resin for tree pits A tree pit and light footpath resin. Laid at around 50 mm rather than the 18 to 22 mm of a surface course, so root zones stay porous and the surround stays walkable. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Addacolor Coloured resin bound surfacing Addaset resin binding coloured rather than natural aggregate, for designs that need a controlled palette or inlaid graphics in the paved surface. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Addaflex R Resin bound rubber stone surfacing A pale brown polyurethane resin binding natural aggregate with recycled rubber tyre chippings — a softer, more forgiving surface where a degree of give matters. The resin darkens under UV. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Addaflex R UV Resin bound rubber stone surfacing, UV-stable The UV-stable version of Addaflex R, binding either recycled rubber tyre chippings or EPDM chippings — so colour holds and the EPDM palette becomes available. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Stonebound UV Resin bound surfacing, UV-stable A UV-stable clear polyurethane resin bound system with the same permeability and skid resistance record as Addaset. Where a project has a Stonebound specification already written, this is the UV grade to hold to. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Stonebound Non UVR Resin bound surfacing, non-UV-stable The non-UV grade of Stonebound, with a tighter application window than the UV version. The resin darkens in sunlight, so it belongs in sheltered or colour-tolerant locations. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Terrabase Resin bound surfacing, high permeability The most permeable system in the range, published at greater than 20 L/sec/m². Where the drainage strategy leans on the surface course, this is the product that carries the number. The resin darkens under UV. Addagrip Terraco Ltd PU Addastone Resin bonded polyurethane surface dressing Resin bonded, not resin bound: the resin is squeegeed onto the substrate and aggregate is broadcast into it. The result is a textured, high-grip dressing rather than a permeable screed, and the substrate preparation rules are much stricter. Addagrip Terraco Ltd Addastone Thixotropic Agent Thickening filler A polyethylene filler added to PU Addastone so the resin stops soaking into asphalt and stays put on a slope. Small component, but it is mandatory on asphalt and it belongs in the specification rather than being left to the site.

Where not to use it

Specifying a material into the wrong place is the most expensive mistake on a finishes package. These are the limits we will raise at review whether or not they are asked about.

Non-UV-stable grades — Addaset Non UVR, Stonebound Non UVR, Addaflex R and Terrabase — will darken in sunlight. Specify a UV grade where colour stability matters. Substrate movement and construction joints must be carried through the surface. Permeability depends on the whole build-up. A permeable surface course over an impermeable base is not a SuDS solution. Do not apply in wet conditions or when the surface is within 3 °C of the dew point. Natural aggregates vary between batches, and iron particles present in some aggregates can cause rust spotting. Resin shelf life is 3 to 6 months by product, stored above 7 °C out of sunlight.
Specification clause

Resin bound surfacing: Addagrip [Addaset / Addaset ECO / Stonebound UV] UV-stable polyurethane resin bound aggregate surface course, [10] mm aggregate laid [22] mm thick, colour and blend to the approved sample panel, over the base course specified. Permeability not less than [17] L/sec/m² to BS EN 12697-40:2005. Skid resistance to TRL 176, Slider 96 greater than 55 (pedestrian). Edge restraint as detailed. Substrate joints to be reflected through the surface course. Full chemical cure 7 days before trafficking. Supply and installation by Earth Layers by Conmarble.

Square brackets mark the choices that belong to the project. Send us the finishes schedule and we will return the clause completed, with the sample and mock-up programme against it.

Microcement A seamless mineral coating at 2 to 3 mm over a prepared substrate, sealed to a defined system. Microcement is durable and low-VOC. It is a cementitious product: specify it for wear, chemical exposure and continuity, not as a natural or breathable finish. Rammed earth In-situ rammed earth is a structural or non-structural wall built in lifts and compacted in place. Rammed earth finishes are a plaster system that reproduces the strata of a rammed wall at 7 to 10 mm on a conventional substrate. The two are specified differently and are not interchangeable.
