Microcement — specification and technical data

A seamless mineral coating at 2 to 3 mm over a prepared substrate, sealed to a defined system. Microcement is durable and low-VOC. It is a cementitious product: specify it for wear, chemical exposure and continuity, not as a natural or breathable finish.

The system

What sits against what, from the substrate outwards. Junctions, movement joints and edge details are project-specific — send us the drawings and we will mark them up.

Microcement floor or wall system

Substrate strength governs. Concrete needs a minimum 25 N/mm² compressive strength and 1.5 N/mm² pull-off.

BUILD ORDER — SUBSTRATE FIRST, IN SEQUENCE Substrate
Dry, clean, free of grease and dust. Previous coatings removed. Ceramic mechanically roughened.
Consolidation and barriers
Compactec consolidator, vapour barrier or Vapoepox rising damp barrier where required. No bonding bridge under Microdur Plus.
Base coats
First base coat, fibreglass mesh embedded into the wet coat, then a second coat. Sanded at 40 grit between coats.
Finish coats
Two finish coats in the selected grain, sanded between coats.
Sealer
Hidroprimer water-based primer, then Aquamax water-based or Maxipur solvent-based varnish. Applied 24 to 48 hours after hardening, below 5% moisture.

Cemher Cemher Microdur Plus Three-component microcement A three-component microcement, waterproof in mass, for continuous floors, walls and ceilings inside and out. Its hardness and chemical resistance are what make it a specification for high-traffic and humid areas — it is a durable, low-VOC cementitious coating, not a natural finish. Cemher Cemher Microrock Two-component polymeric microcement The high-traffic member of the range: a two-component polymeric microcement with a mineral appearance and a compressive class of C80. Specified for garages, warehouses, galleries, stores and corridors, in four grain sizes suitable for both floors and walls. Cemher Microrock Base Two-component microcement base The base coat of the Microrock system: two layers at 2 to 3 mm total. Because the Microrock line is highly waterproof, no pore filler is needed before sealing. Cemher Micropool Two-component microcement for immersed surfaces The immersion-rated microcement in the range. Where Microdur Plus is expressly excluded from pools, Micropool is the product that carries the water-penetration and 28-day no-pressure results a pool detail needs.

Where not to use it

Specifying a material into the wrong place is the most expensive mistake on a finishes package. These are the limits we will raise at review whether or not they are asked about.

Microdur Plus is not suitable for swimming pools or continuously immersed surfaces — specify Micropool for those. Microrock cannot be laid over underfloor heating. Sensitive to vinegar and other organic acids, although resistant to ammonia, water, oil, soft drinks and coffee. Do not apply below 10 °C or above 30 °C. Contains cement and silica. Respiratory protection is required when sanding. Movement joints in the substrate must be carried through the finish.
Specification clause

Microcement: Cemher [Microdur Plus / Microrock / Micropool] system in colour [ref], applied over a substrate of not less than 25 N/mm² compressive strength and 1.5 N/mm² pull-off, in two base coats with fibreglass mesh embedded and two finish coats, to the approved sample panel. Reaction to fire [Class A1 to UNE EN 13501-1:2019 / Class B]. Sealed with Hidroprimer and [Aquamax / Maxipur] not less than 24 hours after hardening and below 5% moisture. Substrate movement joints to be carried through the finish. Supply and application by Earth Layers by Conmarble.

Related systems

Lime plaster A one-component hydraulic lime plaster with marble dust, laid by trowel at 1 to 4 mm over a prepared base. It carries the hardness and the standards record of a mineral coating while reading as a hand-worked surface — tadelakt, marmarino or polished plaster, depending on how it is finished. Primers and sealers The primer and the sealer are part of the system, not an accessory to it. Most finish failures we are called to inspect trace back to the wrong primer, or a sealer applied before the substrate was dry enough. Both carry their own data sheets and both belong in the specification.
