Specifying rammed earth in Abu Dhabi: what architects need to know at concept and tender

Rammed earth is moving from mood board to buildable line item on projects across the Emirates. Here is how to specify it at concept and tender stage so samples, mock-ups, engineering acceptance and procurement all line up.

Why rammed earth is on Abu Dhabi concept boards

Rammed earth in Abu Dhabi is no longer a reference image pinned to a concept board. Cultural, hospitality and villa briefs across the Emirates now ask for walls with genuine mass, honest material expression and a visual language rooted in the region, and in-situ rammed earth delivers all three. Walls are rammed on site in compacted lifts between formwork, and each tamped lift reads as strata across the finished face.

The catch is that rammed earth behaves like neither blockwork nor precast, so it rewards early decisions. The packages that run smoothly are the ones where the specification, the engineering acceptance route and the procurement model are settled at concept stage rather than improvised after tender.

Writing a rammed earth specification that survives tender

A workable rammed earth specification pins down four things: the mix and where it comes from, the compressive strength you will accept, lift heights and the formwork approach, and the visual range you will sign off. On our projects, acceptance testing is carried out to 8 MPa, referencing New Zealand's earth building standards (NZS), a widely used engineering framework for earthen construction.

Name that basis in the tender documents. It gives the structural engineer a recognised route to acceptance and stops the clause collapsing into 'contractor to propose', which is where rammed earth packages tend to stall.

The aesthetic clause matters just as much. The strata are a product of tamping, so no two lifts are identical; specify an approved sample range rather than a single photograph, and the quality conversation on site becomes manageable.

Samples, mock-ups and engineering acceptance

Sequence the approvals deliberately. Small samples come first, to fix colour, banding direction and aggregate character. Then comes a full-scale mock-up panel, built with the same mix, formwork and crew that will build the permanent works.

The mock-up does double duty. It anchors visual sign-off for the architect and gives the engineer test material to accept against the 8 MPa benchmark, so aesthetic and structural approval happen on the same panel.

Build the mock-up into the programme at tender stage. It is the cheapest way to de-risk the package: arris sharpness, lift height, colour drift between batches — every question gets answered on one panel instead of on the building.

One supply-and-install party for rammed earth in the UAE

Rammed earth goes wrong when mix design, formwork and ramming are split between parties, because responsibility for the finished face splits with them. Procure it as a single supply-and-install package: one contractor who designs the mix, builds the forms, rams the lifts and stands behind the acceptance testing.

Natural finishes for Abu Dhabi interiors

Not every wall that wants the strata look needs half a metre of structural earth. Can rammed earth walls be structural in the UAE?

Yes. In-situ walls are rammed in lifts between formwork and accepted against compressive testing; we test to 8 MPa referencing New Zealand's earth building standards (NZS). The project mock-up provides the test material for engineering sign-off.

What should a rammed earth specification include?
