Polished plaster is a lime-based decorative finish burnished to a sheen; tadelakt is a lime plaster compacted and soap-treated so it works in wet areas; microcement is a cement-polymer coating applied over existing substrates. Choose tadelakt for bathrooms, polished plaster for feature walls, microcement for floors and heavy traffic.
Are polished plaster, tadelakt and microcement the same thing?
No. They are grouped together because they all read as smooth, seamless and hand-applied, but they are three different materials with three different chemistries. Many specification problems start with the assumption that the names are interchangeable.
Polished plaster and tadelakt are lime-based mineral finishes. They set, then harden slowly by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air, and they stay vapour-open once cured. Microcement is a cement and polymer coating that cures chemically and is closed with a sealer.
That difference decides almost everything downstream: which substrates each can go over, which rooms they suit, how they are repaired and how they age. Our materials range separates them for exactly this reason.
What is polished plaster?
Polished plaster is a family name rather than one product. The common thread is a lime binder carrying very fine marble or stone dust, laid on in thin coats with a steel trowel and then compressed and burnished until the surface takes on depth and a soft sheen.
Because the aggregate is fine and the layers are thin, polished plaster reads as a single continuous plane with light moving through it rather than a flat painted colour. Venetian plaster is one familiar name for this idea; it describes a technique rather than a brand.
Cemher Microtadelakt, the polished lime plaster we install, sits in this family. It was used on the curved display walls at Afraa Boutique, Place Vendome, Lusail, where the geometry needed a finish that could run round a curve with no joint.

How is tadelakt different from polished plaster?
Tadelakt is a specific lime technique from Morocco, and the difference lies in what happens after the plaster is on the wall. The surface is compacted with a smooth stone while the lime is still soft, then treated with olive oil soap.
The soap reacts with free lime in the plaster to form water-repellent compounds within the surface itself. That is why tadelakt can be used in showers and wet rooms while ordinary polished plaster cannot: the water resistance is part of the material, not a film sitting on top of it.
Lime also resists mould by its own chemistry, which matters in a Gulf bathroom where an air-conditioned room meets hot water several times a day. The method is set out in more detail in what is tadelakt.
What is microcement, and where does it belong?
Microcement is a cement and polymer coating, pigmented and applied in thin coats over a sound existing substrate, then closed with a sealer. Cemher's Microdur Plus, Micropool and Microrock are the systems we install.
It is durable and low-VOC. It is not a natural finish and it is not breathable: the sealer that gives it its wear resistance also closes the surface. We are direct about that, because the honest comparison is the useful one.
What microcement does that the lime finishes do not is take floor traffic and go over existing tile and screed without demolition. At the King Fahad Cultural Centre in Riyadh we installed 9,000 square metres of Microdur Plus. Micropool is the version for pools and immersed surfaces, and Microrock was used at The OQ Hotel in Doha.
For a microcement floor in Dubai, the questions that decide the outcome are the substrate's soundness, the movement joints, and how the finish meets thresholds and drains - not the colour card.
Which finish should you choose for a bathroom, a floor or a feature wall?
For a shower enclosure or a wet room, tadelakt or a polished lime plaster is the natural choice: mineral, vapour-open, repairable, and water resistant by chemistry rather than by coating.
For floors, large continuous areas and retrofits over existing tile, microcement is the practical answer. Lime finishes are wall and ceiling work; they are not floor materials.
For dry feature walls in bedrooms, living rooms, hotel corridors and offices, polished plaster and clay plaster both work, and the choice is about the look and the room's humidity. Clay plaster helps hold a room between 40 and 60% relative humidity and has nothing to off-gas, but it goes on interior walls and ceilings only, never floors and never direct-water zones. Substrate, movement and maintenance: what to settle before you specify
All three finishes are thin. None of them hides a substrate that moves, and none of them bridges a structural crack. Movement joints in the background have to be carried through the finish, and background flatness has to be right before anyone opens a tub.
Maintenance differs. Tadelakt is re-soaped and re-polished; polished plaster can be patched and re-burnished by hand; microcement is patched locally and resealed, and on a floor the sealer is a wearing part. Tadelakt maintenance covers the routine.
The last question is who is holding the trowel. Our artisans are on our own payroll rather than subcontracted, which is why a curved wall and a flat wall in the same room end up looking like one job.
On sustainability, the natural finishes contribute to WELL, LEED and Mostadam scorecards. They are not certifications in themselves, and anyone presenting them that way is overstating the case.
