The finish
Clayworks makes a separate exterior clay plaster, formulated and detailed for the outside of buildings. It is a mineral, vapour-permeable finish that lets moisture move through the wall build-up rather than trapping it behind a film, and it carries its colour through the body of the material rather than as a coat on the surface. It comes in two textures, Exterior Demi-Rustic and Exterior Rustic, with a Tamped Earth effect available as a custom finish. Earth Layers supplies and installs it across Dubai and the wider UAE as Clayworks' sole authorised distributor and approved applicator in the Middle East.
The system is built up in coats — a stipple coat to key the background, then a base coat, then the finish coat — over a properly prepared and detailed substrate. It is worked by hand, and it cures slowly; a facade needs weeks rather than days before it settles to its final colour. That slow cure is part of why exterior clay behaves well once it is on: the material carbonates and hardens into the wall rather than sitting on top of it.
Outside, texture does most of the work. Exterior Demi-Rustic reads as a fine, close-grained surface that stays quiet until low sun rakes across it; Exterior Rustic is coarser and more openly aggregated, so a facade in it changes noticeably between the flat light of midday and the long shadows of late afternoon. The Tamped Earth custom effect pushes this further, laying the wall down in visible horizontal passes that mimic the strata of rammed construction. Because colour runs through the body, a scuff or a knock exposes more of the same material, not a different substrate.
It ages as a mineral surface ages. The finish is designed to weather rather than to stay factory-new, and localised areas can be repaired later with colour-matched material by a trained applicator, without stripping and recoating a whole elevation. Regular facade inspection is part of the specification, in the same way it would be for any external render.
What makes it demanding is the detailing and the discipline. Junctions, copings, sills and drainage all have to be resolved before a bag is opened, and on a Gulf site the working window has to be managed so the plaster is not forced to dry in direct sun and wind. Continuity matters too — a large elevation has to be run without cold joins. Canvas Events Pavilion in Dubai shows what the system can do at scale, in exterior white across a curved facade, and Field Trip Spa in Brighton was finished in Exterior Rustic White WHI-07.
Where it belongsSamples
Swatches are made by hand, so no two are identical. Colour on a screen is a starting point — we make trial panels on your substrate before anything is agreed.

Questions we hear
Can the interior clay plaster be used outside?
No. The interior Clayworks plasters are for internal walls and ceilings only. Exterior work uses the dedicated exterior clay system, which is a different formulation with its own build-up and detailing requirements.
How does it perform in UAE sun and heat?
It is a mineral finish with colour through the body, so it does not rely on a surface coat that can chalk or peel away from the wall. Performance outside comes as much from detailing, substrate preparation and curing as from the material, so we plan the application window and protection on site. Clayworks states a life expectancy of 25 years and above and a 10-year manufacturer's warranty, subject to correct detailing, application and maintenance.
What about rain and water run-off?
Junctions, copings, sills and drainage have to be designed so water is thrown clear of the surface. The plaster is vapour permeable and suits walls that need to breathe, but it is not intended for standing water, permanently saturated conditions or horizontal surfaces.
Which textures and colours are available for exterior work?
Two standard textures, Exterior Demi-Rustic and Exterior Rustic, plus Tamped Earth as a custom effect. Colour comes from the Clayworks range of 89 standard shades with custom matching — codes such as White WHI-07, Nude NUD-01 or Terracotta TER-03. We recommend a sample panel on site before the elevation is signed off.
