Tadelakt

The finish that goes where clay plaster cannot. Lime and clay, compressed with stone and sealed with olive soap, for bathrooms, hammams and showers across Dubai and the UAE.

Tadelakt is a burnished lime-and-clay finish for wet rooms. It is applied by hand, compressed and polished with a stone until the surface closes, then treated with olive soap, which saponifies against the lime to leave a water-repellent skin. The result is a seamless wall with no grout lines and no joints — the reason it has been used in bathhouses for centuries, and the reason we specify it wherever clay plaster should not go. Application is slow and physical. The plaster goes on in thin passes, and as it firms the applicator works it back with a smooth stone, pass after pass, until the surface tightens and takes on a faint lustre. Only then does the soap treatment go on. There is no shortcut in that sequence: burnish too early and the surface stays open, too late and it will not close at all. This is why tadelakt is quoted as a craft rate rather than a coverage rate.

Light is what people notice first. A burnished tadelakt wall reads soft and slightly wet, the sheen shifting as you move past it, with the colour sitting in the body of the material rather than on top. The stone work leaves faint clouding and directional movement, so no two panels are identical and long runs are best read as one continuous surface. Terracotta TER-03 and Brown BRO-04 warm under low light; Blue BLU-05 and Purple PUR-01 go deep and mineral. Custom colours are matched to sample.

It ages by settling rather than degrading. The soaped skin repels water instead of sealing it in, so a tadelakt bathroom still lets moisture move — useful in Dubai, where air-conditioned rooms swing between humid and dry. Splash zones darken briefly and recover. Over years the surface gains a patina where hands and water touch it most, and it can be re-soaped rather than replaced. Everyday care is simple: pH-neutral or olive soap, no acids, no abrasive pads.

Built work carries this better than description. Penhaligon's Regent Street is finished in tadelakt in Williams green — an interior where the seamless wall and the depth of the burnish do work no tiled surface could. Custom variants extend the range further: hand-carved tadelakt for relief and pattern, and pressed-linen tadelakt, where woven cloth is impressed into the fresh surface for a fine textile grain.
