Demi Rustic clay plaster

The middle register of the Clayworks range: more aggregate and more trowel movement than Smooth, but still a disciplined wall. The marks read as worked material rather than applied texture.

Demi Rustic is the finish most projects arrive at once they have seen Smooth and decided the wall needs to hold a little more light. It carries a coarser aggregate and a visible trowel pass, so the surface has depth and movement without tipping into open, heavily broken texture. Like every Clayworks plaster it is unfired natural clay, breathable, pigmented through the body rather than coated on the surface, and with nothing to off-gas into the room. Earth Layers supplies and installs it across Dubai and the wider UAE with our own artisans, as Clayworks' sole authorised distributor and approved applicator in the Middle East.

Applied by hand in coats and closed with a directional trowel pass, Demi Rustic keeps a flat plane while letting the aggregate and the movement of the tool show. Read up close it is granular and slightly open; read from across a room it settles into an even, quiet field. That is the useful part of the middle register — it gives a wall something to do without asking the whole space to be about texture.

It takes raking light better than almost anything else in the range, which is why it turns up on large uninterrupted walls and in hospitality. Villa 515 in Dubai used it in Custom Yellow YEL-01, where the low afternoon light pulls the trowel direction out of the surface. Toplum in Riyadh used White WHI-01 across relief panels, letting the texture describe the geometry rather than compete with it. Desert Rock Resort on the Red Sea took a custom brown so the interior walls sit against the surrounding rock without matching it exactly.

Colour lives in the body of the plaster, so the finish ages by softening rather than by wearing through to a different colour underneath. Knocks and scuffs stay within the same tone and can be worked back locally by an applicator. The plaster continues to breathe and buffer moisture in use, helping hold a room in the 40 to 60% relative humidity band that most people find comfortable — a real consideration in heavily air-conditioned Gulf interiors.

The difficulty is consistency. Demi Rustic has enough movement to show a change of hand, a change of pressure or a stopped edge, and a large wall finished by two people working differently will read as two walls. It has to be laid out wet edge to wet edge and completed in one continuous run, which means the sequencing matters as much as the trowel work. Our applicators are on our own payroll rather than subcontracted, so the same team that starts a wall finishes it.
