Yes. Cured lime plaster is strongly alkaline, and a high-pH mineral surface is hostile to mould growth. That chemistry is real but partial: lime also lets moisture move out of the surface rather than sit on it. Neither replaces extraction, drainage falls or sound waterproofing behind the finish.
Does lime plaster prevent mould, or only resist it?
It resists it. Fresh lime is strongly alkaline, and a high-pH mineral surface is a poor place for mould spores to establish themselves. Lime hardens by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air, and while that carbonation gradually moderates surface alkalinity over time, the finish remains mineral rather than becoming an organic food source.
The wording matters. A lime wall does not sterilise a room, and it cannot stop growth appearing on the silicone, the grout or the soap residue beside it. What it does is remove one of the conditions mould needs, on the surface it covers.
That is a statement about how a material behaves, not a claim about anyone's health. Any persistent mould problem in a home is a building problem first, and is worth investigating as one.
What actually causes mould in a humid Gulf bathroom?
Mould needs moisture, a temperature range it likes, and something to feed on. In a Dubai or Abu Dhabi bathroom the first is rarely in short supply: high outdoor humidity, air conditioning producing cool surfaces where condensation forms, and shower water several times a day.
The nutrient is often not the wall at all. It is the residue sitting on the wall — soap film, body oils, shampoo, dust — on a surface that never fully dries between uses.
So the useful question is not which coating kills mould. It is which build-up dries fastest, holds least residue and can be cleaned without being damaged. That reframes the choice of a humid bathroom finish in a more honest way.
How lime plaster handles moisture
Lime is vapour-open and finely porous. Moisture reaching it can move through and out rather than being held at an interface behind a sealed film, which is what happens with a closed render or a heavy paint system.
A wall that dries quickly after wetting spends fewer hours in the condition mould needs. That is the practical mechanism, and it works alongside the alkalinity rather than instead of it.
Tadelakt takes the same material in a different direction. Burnished and soaped, it is dense and water-resistant on the face while still being lime in its body. That is why lime and tadelakt cover our wet areas, while clay plaster stays out of them — clay belongs on dry interior walls and ceilings, where it helps hold a room between 40 and 60 per cent relative humidity.
Is lime an anti mould plaster?
Anti mould plaster is a marketing phrase applied to two different things. One is a mineral plaster that resists growth by its own nature. The other is a cement or gypsum product dosed with a biocide.
The distinction shows up over time. A biocide is a consumable: it leaches, degrades and eventually stops working, at which point the substrate underneath is exactly what it always was. Lime's resistance comes from what the material is, so it does not run out in the same way, although its alkalinity does moderate as carbonation completes.
Neither approach substitutes for controlling water. A biocidal plaster on a wall that stays wet will grow mould eventually. So will lime. The material buys margin; it does not buy immunity.
Where lime helps in a Gulf bathroom, and where it does not
Lime and tadelakt earn their place on bathroom walls, splashbacks, shower enclosures, hammams and spa rooms. They are seamless, mineral, dense where they need to be, and repairable in patches rather than in whole elevations.
They do not replace the waterproofing membrane behind them, correct falls to drainage, properly sealed penetrations or working extraction. A finish sits at the end of a long chain of decisions and cannot rescue the ones made earlier in it.
They also do not solve a condensation problem caused by a chilled surface. Where an air-conditioned wall runs consistently below dew point, the answer is in insulation and air movement, and no plaster changes that.

Lime, tadelakt or microcement in a wet room?
Lime plaster suits walls in humid rooms where a vapour-open, mineral, hand-worked surface is wanted. Tadelakt suits the wet zone itself, where the surface has to shed water and stay seamless around curves and reveals.
Microcement is the third option and a different proposition. Cemher microcement is durable and low-VOC, and it gives a hard, sealed, jointless surface suited to floors and high-traffic wet areas — the reason Microrock was used at The OQ Hotel in Doha. It is not a natural or breathable finish, and it should not be specified as though it were.
