Resin bound vs resin bonded: what is the difference?

The two names differ by one letter and the systems differ by nearly everything that matters. One is mixed and trowelled, the other scattered onto adhesive. Here is what that changes on site.

Resin bound aggregate is stone mixed with resin in a forced-action mixer and trowelled out as a solid, permeable layer. Resin bonded is a scattered layer of dry stone dropped onto a resin-coated base: rougher, impermeable underneath, and prone to shedding loose grit.

What is resin bound aggregate?

Resin bound aggregate is a mixed system. Dried, graded stone and a clear two-part resin are combined in a forced-action mixer until every particle is coated, then the wet mix is barrowed out and trowelled to an even depth over a prepared base.

Because the binder runs through the whole thickness, the finished surface is one continuous layer rather than a skin sitting on something else. Small voids stay open between the coated stones, and those voids are what make the surface permeable.

The result is level, firm and quiet underfoot, with the stone fully visible but held. What is resin bonded gravel?

Resin bonded gravel is a scattered system. A resin adhesive is applied across a sound, sealed base, typically concrete or asphalt, and dry stone is broadcast over it by hand or hopper while the resin is still open.

Only the underside of each stone is held. The face of the surface stays open and sharp, close to the appearance of loose gravel, which is exactly why some designers choose it: the texture is coarse and the grip is high.

The adhesive layer beneath, however, is continuous and closed. Water cannot pass through it, so a resin bonded surface has to be drained in the same way as any sealed paving, using falls, channels and gullies.

Because the stone sits proud, the surface also reads darker and busier than a bound finish laid with the same aggregate. Samples of the two systems side by side surprise most people the first time.

What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?

The method is the difference, and everything else follows from it. Resin bound is mixed and then laid. Resin bonded is laid and then scattered.

Four practical consequences come out of that. Permeability: bound is porous through its full depth, bonded is not. Texture: bound is smooth and level, bonded is rough and gravel-like.

Loose stone: bound locks the aggregate into a matrix, whereas bonded holds each stone by a single contact face, so some shedding is inherent to the system rather than a fault in it. Wear: bound distributes load through a bonded thickness, bonded relies on the adhesion of one stone layer to the base below.

Confusion between the two names is common in tender documents, and it matters more than a typo should. Specifying resin bonded where the drainage strategy assumed a permeable surface changes the whole surface water design, and it is usually discovered late.

Does resin bonded gravel shed loose stone?

Some loss is normal and should be expected. Each stone is held on one face, so turning tyres, foot scuff, brushing and mechanical sweeping will free a proportion of the surface layer over time. That loose grit then collects at edges, in channels and inside the house on shoe soles.

Resin bound behaves differently. The aggregate sits inside a continuous matrix rather than on top of one, so loose material on the surface is usually windblown sand or garden debris rather than the paving itself.

For driveways, villa entrances, terraces and pool surrounds where bare feet, clean thresholds and easy sweeping matter, this single point often decides the specification on its own.

It is also worth being honest about the reverse case. On a steep ramp where grip is the priority and a little shed grit is tolerable, the coarse bonded texture is doing a job that a smooth surface does not do as well.

Which lasts longer on a driveway?

Like for like, resin bound generally gives the longer service life, because the binder works through the full thickness rather than at a single interface where one stone meets one film of adhesive.

The honest answer, though, is that installation and base quality decide more than the product name does. Both systems are only as stable as what they sit on. A base that moves, cracks or holds water will telegraph through either surface, and no resin layer repairs a failing sub-base.

Conditions at the time of laying matter as well. Resin cures on a chemistry sensitive to temperature and moisture, which in the Gulf means planning the pour around the temperature of the slab rather than around the programme. We go into Gulf behaviour in resin bound durability in the UAE.

Edge restraint is the third factor. A bound surface held by proper metal or masonry edging stays where it was laid; an unrestrained edge is where both systems begin to break down.

Where each system earns its place

Resin bonded still has genuine uses: steep ramps and slopes where a coarse, high-grip texture is wanted, decorative bands and thresholds, and overlays on a sound sealed base where permeability plays no part in the drainage design.

Resin bound suits driveways, promenades, courtyards, terraces, tree pits and accessible routes. It is level, firm, friendly to wheels and pushchairs, and permeable where the layers beneath allow it. There is more on that in how water passes through a resin bound surface.

Aggregate choice sits across both systems. Colour, stone size and blend change how the surface reads against stone, plaster or planting, and pale blends behave very differently from dark ones under Gulf sun. Handling samples outdoors is worth the half hour.

Questions we hear

Is resin bonded gravel permeable?

No. The resin adhesive forms a continuous sealed film across the base, so water cannot pass through it. Resin bonded surfaces need falls, channels and gullies in the same way as concrete or asphalt.

Can you tell the two apart just by looking at a surface?

Usually yes. Resin bound reads as a level, closed plane with the stone set flush and a slightly matt sheen, while resin bonded reads as loose gravel with individual stones standing proud. Running a hand across the surface settles it: bonded feels sharp and gritty.

Can resin bound aggregate be laid over an existing concrete or asphalt driveway?

Often it can, provided the existing slab is sound, clean, stable and free of movement, and any joints are carried through rather than bridged. The catch is that a sealed slab underneath removes the permeability, so the drainage has to be designed as though the surface were sealed.

Will a resin bound driveway take vehicles?

Yes, when the build-up is designed for vehicles rather than adapted from a footpath specification. Depth, base construction and edge restraint all change for vehicular use, and turning loads at a standstill are the demanding case.

Which is more suitable for a pool surround or terrace?

Resin bound, in almost every case. It is smooth underfoot, does not shed sharp grit into the pool or the house, and drains rather than pooling. Pale aggregate blends are the usual choice for barefoot areas.
