Lime plaster sets within hours and is usually touch-dry in one to three days, but full cure takes far longer: carbonation, the reaction with carbon dioxide that turns lime back to limestone, proceeds from the surface inward over weeks to months depending on thickness, humidity and airflow.
How long does lime plaster take to dry, and how long to cure?
Three things happen at different speeds, and they are usually collapsed into one word. The plaster stiffens and takes its final shape within hours. It dries, losing its mixing water, over the following days. It cures, chemically, over weeks and months.
In practical terms a lime coat is generally firm enough to work the following day, touch-dry within a day or two in Gulf conditions, and stable enough for light use of the room within a week or two. Full carbonation continues long after the room is occupied.
This matters because the finish is at its most vulnerable in the gap between looking finished and being cured. That is when knocks, cleaning chemicals and premature sealers do their damage. What is lime carbonation, and why does it take so long?
Lime plaster hardens by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. The calcium hydroxide in the plaster reacts with CO2 and converts back into calcium carbonate - chemically, back into limestone. That is carbonation, and it is why lime is described as a slow binder.
The reaction needs three things at once: carbon dioxide from the air, enough moisture in the plaster to carry the reaction, and time. Too dry and it stalls; too wet and the CO2 cannot get in. The reaction front works inward from the surface, so thickness governs duration.
A thin skim carbonates far faster than a thick build-up in several coats. Nothing about the process can genuinely be accelerated: heat and fans dry the plaster, which is not the same as curing it, and drying it too fast is a reliable way to weaken a lime finish.
What site conditions change lime plaster curing time in the UAE?
Temperature, relative humidity and airflow, in that order. A Dubai summer gives high heat and, indoors under air conditioning, low humidity - a combination that pulls water out of the plaster before carbonation has made much progress.
Air conditioning blowing straight onto fresh lime is the condition to watch. So is direct sun through unglazed openings, and so is site wind through a shell that is not yet closed. Each of them dries the face faster than the depth.
The remedy is not exotic: keep the surface damp enough for long enough, shade it, and slow the air moving over it. On our jobs the applicators mist and shade fresh work as part of the sequence rather than as a rescue measure.
Coastal work in Abu Dhabi and Dubai adds salt-laden air, and inland sites add dust. Neither stops carbonation, but both argue for protecting the surface until it has hardened.
Does tadelakt cure differently from ordinary lime plaster?
The chemistry is the same, but the timing of the follow-up work is not. Tadelakt is compacted with a stone while the lime is still soft, and the olive oil soap treatment has to land in the window where free lime is still available to react with it.
That means the tadelakt programme is dictated by the material rather than by the site diary. Too early and the surface is disturbed; too late and the soap has little to react with. The sequence is covered in lime plaster and tadelakt in the UAE and in what is tadelakt.

How should a programme account for lime plaster curing time?
Book lime late, and give it a clear run. It belongs after the wet trades, after first fix, and ideally once the building is closed enough to control temperature and air movement. Following trades working over a fresh lime wall is the expensive scenario.
Allow for the coats, not just the days. Each coat needs its predecessor to have taken up before the next goes on, and thicker systems need more of that waiting. A programme that shows lime plaster as a single bar is usually a programme that will slip.
Wet rooms need a further pause. Tadelakt should not meet daily shower use on the day the scaffold comes down. Give the surface time to harden, and hand over with a clear instruction on when the room can be used and what to clean it with.
Hold the sealing and painting decisions too. Applying a film-forming sealer or a non-mineral paint over lime that has not carbonated traps the reaction and can cause the finish to fail later. Lime plaster vs cement render explains why vapour-open build-ups matter here.
What goes wrong when lime is rushed
Dusting is the usual symptom of a surface that dried before it carbonated: the binder never fully converted, so the face powders under a cloth. Crazing points instead to a coat that was too rich or that dried unevenly across its area.
Shrinkage cracks on day one are a mix or a suction problem rather than a curing problem, and they are corrected differently. Patchy colour weeks later usually traces back to uneven drying - a fan in one corner, sun on one wall.
Nearly all of it is avoidable through control of conditions rather than heroics on site. That is the argument for putting lime in the hands of applicators who do it every week; ours are on our own payroll rather than subcontracted.
